Echocardiography is a painless scan that produces live images of the heart using sound waves. It allows the cardiologist to assess the health of the heart muscle and to monitor how the heart and its valves are performing.
01Why It’s Done
Dr Lee may recommend this for patients with:
Assessing chest pain, breathlessness or palpitations
Evaluating heart murmurs and valve disease
Monitoring heart failure and the heart’s pumping function
As part of a heart screening
02How It Works
A small probe (transducer) is applied to the skin over the chest.
It emits sound waves that “echo” back from the heart.
These echoes are displayed as moving images on a monitor.
The scan takes about 20 minutes and needs no special preparation.
03Duration, Recovery & What To Expect
Echocardiography is completely painless, involves no radiation, and you can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.
